Wedding DJs and Emcees

They’ll Dance, They’ll Cheer, They’ll Remember…

Experience + Training = The Difference

In order to do any profession right you need the proper training and lot of experience right?  Isn’t that what employers are looking for when they are hiring someone to join their company?  You are hiring someone to join your wedding team.  What’s on your DJ’s Resume?  Here is ours:

Education and Training

Our DJs have the best training and education in the industry.  Starting with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television broadcasting from California State University at Chico and over 6 years experience working as a real, on air radio personality.  There we were required to learn the proper way to utilize a microphone and host an event that involved as many as 10,000 people.  In addition to that, while most of the “weekend” or “hobbyist” DJs are working their “real” jobs, we are attending seminars and training classes put on by broadcast and industry professionals so we can keep this as our “real” job.

Experience

We have over 27 years of experience in the wedding DJ industry.  It’s this experience that really shows in the quality of our work.  That is 27 years of practicing and utilizing the skills needed to execute a wedding at a level most other DJs only dream about.  These skills are as follows:

Organization

It is important that everything be organized and that the DJ has immediate access to the information as the elements are executed.  It’s also imperative that the DJ be able to find the information in case of a unforeseen issue at the wedding.  If something comes up and needs to be changed, it can be changed very quickly.  For example, when I was working a wedding a couple of weeks ago, the best man took a detour and was absent when it came time for the grand entrance.  Since we prepared a special custom grand entrance, I had less than 30 seconds to get to my information and make a change before the element was to be executed.  This made it seamless for the guest and the bride as she never even realized that there was an issue and it didn’t affect her experience.

Emceeing

In order to be a professional emcee, there are certain things you need to know.

Microphone skills — Contrary to popular belief, professional emcees didn’t just pick up a microphone and start talking into it and because they have a great voice, they know what to do. They take classes on how to hold a microphone properly so that when they adjust their voice with different inflections, it doesn’t result in a negative experience for your audience.

Public speaking skills – Professionals need to know how to prepare what they are going to say ahead of time and practice it so that when they speak, it doesn’t sound scripted and they aren’t using words like “Um, oh, uh, hmm” or anything else you may say while you are thinking of what you are going to say next. Hand gestures and body language can be a real distraction — professionals train in know how to stand in front of a group of people to speak to them without any weird facial ticks or nervous hand movement, and they don’t pace!

Professionals select their words properly. Some people can find some words to be more offensive than others. So when a professional is acting as an emcee for an event like a wedding, he/she has to select words that have a mass appeal and that everyone will understand. Most importantly the professional selects words so that there will be no confusion as to what they meant. They always know what it is they are going to say ahead of time and practiced it several time to make sure the announcement is perfect.

These skills are some of the most important skills that a wedding DJ must possess to perform his/her job at a level above mediocrity.
