(Written by Orange County Wedding DJ specialist Mark Cherney.  Owner of Orange County based wedding DJ company Music Man Event Professionals)

A wedding is one of the most important days in the lives of many couples.  It rates up there with the birth of your first child as well as any child that follows.  It’s a time to celebrate and bring people who are important to you, together to join in celebrating and blessing your unity.

The wedding reception is the main part of the celebration.  It is your gift to your guests that allows them to celebrate you both and the love you share.  Your wedding reception is where many of your lifelong memories together will start and the Wedding DJ plays a key role in the success of your wedding.

Keeping that in mind,  when working with our clients to help them plan a wedding, we here at Orange County Wedding DJ company Music Man Event professionals ask ourselves three very important questions about our service and your guests’ response to it:

Will they Cheer?

When we work with our clients, we want to make sure all of the guests participate in the event.  The least amount of participation you should expect from your guests is the cheer.  Many Orange County wedding DJs use the phrase “How about a big round of applause” or “Put your hands together for” to coax this minimum level of participation out of your guests.  To us, that’s cheating and tends to be fake.  Instead we want the cheers and applause to be a natural reaction to what is happening.  We want your guests to have the urge to clap and cheer versus having them only do what they are told.  Let’s start the evening off with an injection of energy or buzz.

Will They Dance?

With this question, we first focus on the the guests of honor or as most people refer to them, the bride and groom.  We get to know them and what they like and then we make sure we have plenty of music that will please them.  Then, we focus on the guests.  Our goal is to be prepared for just about any kind of request that comes along, so we always carry with us a huge selection of music the spans multiple generations and genres.  From the time the reception starts, we are constantly watching people’s reactions to the music we play to get an idea of what they respond positively to and what they don’t.  We also look at the cocktail hour and dinner as their warm-up period.  This is where we have to work to establish a mood in the room that encourages dancing and celebrating.  By the time the dancing part of the reception comes, your guests will be ready to get out there and dance.  It’s skills like this that really separates the great wedding DJs from the good ones.

Will They Remember?

The last question we ask is the most important of the three.  Will the wedding be unique and exciting enough to make an impression on the guests and the couple such that it creates memories that will last a lifetime?  You see, people have a tendency to remember events that happen around them that are different or unique.  We work with our clients to find out who they are and to “inject” a little bit of who they are into their formalities to make it just different enough to make a lasting impression on their guests.  Don’t get me wrong … that doesn’t mean copying things from YouTube.  Instead it involves creating something no one has ever seen before that really reflects the couple.

So if you know anyone that is planning a reception and wants their guests to Cheer, Dance and Remember, have them give us a call at (949) 940-8998 or visit us online at our wedding DJ page.

Orange County Wedding DJ in Fullerton

by DJMarkC on August 25, 2010

Orange County DJ company Music Man Event Professionals was the DJ of choice for the Gray wedding at the Springfield Banquet and Conference Center in Fullerton California.

The Grays had contacted Music Man Event Professionals and explained that they were looking for a DJ service that could execute their wedding reception in a professional manner while maintaining their Christian values.  They wanted their reception to be an overall beautiful experience that their guests would remember for a long time.  We were able to help them accomplish this.

We started by providing our professional level lighting services to light up this historic Masonic Temple to

create an elegant mood that encourage their guests to get out and have fun on the dance floor.  We did this by providing uplighting around the outer walls that matched their color theme, red. We also created a custom monogram that was projected on the dance floor during dinner and the formalities.  For a different twist we actually projected a starry sky lighting effect on the ceiling that gave the impression that they were dancing under the stars when the lights were lowered.  The room looked elegant and beautful.  So much that the staff at the venue told us they had never seen the room light up as beautifully as for this wedding.  They took a stack of our business cards.

The bride and groom were also concerned about the diversity of the group.  There was going to be a diverse group of people there ranging from African Americans  to Latinos so they wanted to make sure there was something for everyone.  We did just that mixing a great mix of R&B and Hip Hop with Motown, and Latin hits including Salsa, Merengue, Cumbias, ChaChas and more.  Everyone eventually got out on the floor and they partied all the way to the end.  Mission accomplished!

Orange County Wedding DJ

Finding a great wedding DJ is not easy

How did you find us?  Did you Google “Orange County Wedding DJ”?   Or how about just “Wedding DJ”?   If so, then you received a list of results that spanned many pages with thousands of different Wedding DJ companies listed.  So how do you know which wedding DJs to talk to or even which one to hire?  This is exactly the questions many of our clients ask.  So we are going to provide you with some information and questions you might want to ask to know which DJ is right for you.

Things you need to know first:

1)  Anybody can call themselves a wedding DJ.   That’s right, there is no certification process to ensure that every DJ that calls themselves a wedding DJ has the skills to do the job much less do the job well.  Weddings take a lot of hard work to plan and execute properly and the majority of the bad wedding DJs don’t take the time to learn or perfect these skills.  This is why you hear more stories about bad wedding DJs ruining weddings.  Most of the time, the people that hired them focused too much on price instead of finding out who they are getting.

2)  Most Wedding DJs only perform weddings part-time while working other jobs during the week.  The DJs who perform the best weddings are wedding DJs by profession.  Why is this better?  Well, because the DJ who relies on the success of each and every event they do to provide their living is going to invest the time to make sure they have the right skills to execute the wedding DJ job properly and you know they are not going to cancel on you because their other job needed them.  (We hear this happening all the time).  For less important events like Little Billy’s 5th birthday party, hiring these DJs are great because quite frankly they are cheap.  When it comes to a wedding though, unless you really don’t care about what happens at your wedding, stay far away from these wedding DJs or you are asking for trouble.

So what you should look for when looking to hire your wedding DJ?

1)  Skills – Does the Wedding DJ have the skills to execute a wedding reception properly?  These skills would be emceeing skills, coordination skills and music selection skills.  Although the last one is the easiest, a true professional can do it without having to have you pick out all the songs for him.  If this happens, why do you need him/her?

Great DJs create great memories

2)  Training – How did the Wedding DJ develop those skills and who taught it to them?  Many of the wedding DJs out there learn how to do things  from other poor wedding DJs.  It is a prime example of the blind leading the blind.  Look for good Wedding DJs to have developed their skills in school and working in the radio and television industries.  Club DJs make horrible wedding DJs as they do not require or teach emceeing skills and most think they can wing it (which they can, but it’s typically not good and is rarely polished or professional).

3)  Experience – How long have they been Wedding DJs and how many weddings do they DJ a year?  This will give you an idea of how in demand they are and whether people like their services.  Always ask for references or look for real video testimonials of their clients.  Too many wedding DJs make up written testimonials hoping you will believe them.  Look for reviews on Wedding Wire and Facebook also and see that people say about them.

If you follow these guidelines, you will succeed more time than not in hiring a professional Wedding DJ that will give you a great wedding reception.  How much do they cost?  That depends.  If you budget around $2,000, you should be perfect.  (I am not saying that we cost $2,000 or that most good DJs are around $2,000 but by budgeting $2,000 you will have enough budget to afford the one you want versus the one you can afford and typically will have some extra money left over to use for something else later like the honeymoon!)

Orange County Wedding DJ company Music Man Event Professionals was the Orange County Wedding DJ of choice for the Cherry wedding at the Surf and Sand in Laguna Beach.

This wedding was a little different for us as the bride and groom weren’t local here in Orange County and were very busy.  So we were actually retained by a family member and then we worked via email with the groom all the way across the country to plan the wedding when he was available.

Laguna Beach Wedding DJ - The Surf and Sand

Surf and Sand First Dance

This wedding they were at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach in Orannge County California which is a very beautiful location.  On top of that the staff there is great!  Part of what we were hired to do was to provide some elegant lighting to liven up the room.  So our lighting package for this wedding included our signature name in lights plan with ambient up lighting and of course dance floor lighting.

As you can see to the left, the ambient uplighting was light blue to match the color theme of the wedding and was splashed tastefully on the walls around the room.  On the dance floor we presented the names of the bride and groom with the initial for their new last name.  We love this set up as it really adds a sense of elegance to the atmosphere of the event and makes for great wedding album photos.

The music for the event was custom-tailored for the event by Music Man Event Professionals utilizing our years of experience in judging reactions to the atmosphere music during dinner.  We were able to blend the right kinds of music to keep the dance floor filled and the guests having a great time.  As you can see with the photo to the right, the mix was fun, energetic and encourages people of all ages to get out and have fun. Laguna Beach Wedding DJ

The groom emailed us to say “Mark, everything you did was just what we wanted!  It was like you were reading our minds!  The room looked great, the grand entrance was incredible and the music was by far the best we mix of music we have every experienced at a wedding.  Everyone is still ranting and raving about how much fun it was!  Thanks again for a great time and for giving us a wedding that we will cherish forever.”
